Don’t Hate The Game, Hate The Player!

Beer Pong is a popular drinking game across the country.

There is a lot of ruckus surrounding colleges when it comes to Dartmouth Pong or, the sister game, Beer Pong. You can see these games being played at any college in the nation on the weekends. Most of the noise is about the bad publicity these games are giving colleges and turning them into party schools! The Newsweek article explains many valid points about the rise in sexual assault, alcoholism and binge drinking and they are correct. My only problem with their explanations is that they are blaming the game and not the people playing the game who simply cannot control themselves.

The game is not causing these college students to commit sexual assault crimes and alcoholism, it is the students who can’t handle themselves and possibly need some psychological help that are giving the games a reputation like Joan Jett.  To me the game sparks athleticism and coordination when it comes to playing, with Pong utilizing the ability to aim paddle hits into the cup and Beer Pong utilizing basketball skills. Pong also sparks imagination and creativity when students are creating their custom Pong boards. College presidents and officials need to think about that and rethink the idea of these internet seminars and keeping students from registering for classes if they do not complete the seminar. This reminds me of the Prohibition Era, and during the Prohibition Era, my Great Grandfather was a smuggler! So what does that tell you? To me it says that it is going to happen anyway so don’t hate the game, hate the player!

The Big Ten: Fall Of An Empire

8223869677_3391cc7ef0_z   The Big Ten conference in college football is one of the least popular FBS conferences in college football today. The reason for that is the lack of talent, and the lack of popularity for the teams within the conference. The most popular teams in the conference are Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan. These three teams are the only teams that are making a name for the Big Ten.

That name, however, is quickly disappearing; and Rolling Stone explained how with saying “The precipitous fall of the Big Ten in the 21st century was highlighted, most notably, by Ohio State’s back-to-back losses in national championship games at the end of the 2006 and 2007 seasons.” Recently, the only teams keeping the Big Ten alive also killed the Big Ten in week one of the 2014 season. Ohio State was upset at home against a great Virginia Tech team, and Michigan was shutout in the last game ever against Notre Dame! The biggest game was the No.1 defense of Michigan State against the No. 1 offense of Oregon, and Michigan State gave up twenty eight unanswered points to cap its’ loss to Oregon! needless to say, the Big Ten is nonexistent after week one!

Is America’s Pastime Losing America?

It has been a long time coming when it comes to Baseball being a dying sport.

When it comes to athlete exposure and popularity, baseball players are toward the bottom of the list. The most popular baseball player still playing today is Derek Jeter, and He is popular now because he started in the MLB when baseball still reigned supreme! Today fans would not know an athlete in public, even if they walked up and asked you for directions! Even the most popular baseball players today, like Mike Trout and Yasiel Puig, will go unnoticed walking around the town that they play for.

The one thing baseball has over other sports is revenue! The younger generation watches football and basketball way more than baseball, yet baseball has more money because of smaller rosters and more fan attendance. The New Yorker explains how strong annual revenues are today, and the $8 billion doubles the amount of revenue back in the prime of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. So my point is the MLB needs to find a way to market themselves and players to add more interest for fans to watch the games on TV when they aren’t at the game, and I will wait patiently while the NBA and the NFL continue to kill the MLB in the ratings!
